How Wood Pellet Boilers Work

Wood pellet burning

If you’re an environmentally conscious homeowner, you have probably heard of – or maybe even considered installing – a wood pellet boiler.

But how much do you really know about this eco-friendly home heating option?

Here are some wood pellet boiler basics to get you started. If you have any other questions, contact us today – we’re one of NY State’s most experienced wood pellet boiler installers, and one of the only NYSERDA-certified wood pellet installation contractors in our Finger Lakes service area.

Wood pellet boiler basics: How it works

  • Wood pellet heating systems typically have four components—a burner, which ignites the pellets; a hopper, which stores unused pellets; a conveyor (a vacuum or auger), which transfer the pellets from the hopper to the burner, and a controller, which automatically responds to the demands of your thermostat and appliances.
  • If the thermostat calls for heat, or if you turn on a hot water tap or appliance, your boiler will automatically feed pellets into the burner, ignite the pellets and set the boiler’s firing rate to match the required heating load.
  • If the boiler needs more pellets, the vacuum / augur system will pull pellets from your bulk pellet storage bin and refill itself.
  • During and after burn cycles, the boiler will clean the burn pot and heat exchanger areas, moving ash into an ash bin. The ash bin should be emptied once for every 2-3 ton of pellets you burn.

Other pellet boiler facts

  • Pellet bins come in a range of sizes – a small bin will hold a week’s worth of pellets; a large bin that will hold enough pellets for a month or longer. The bulk-storage hopper is completely sealed, so it emits almost no noticeable dust.
  • Wood pellets can be delivered in bulk directly to a storage bin installed outside your home; the bins are weather resistant, attractive and long lasting. Your boiler system can even be set up to automatically retrieve pellets from your outdoor storage bin!
  • Your pellet boiler can link directly to your existing plumbing and heating system, with or without the existing heating oil boiler remaining.
  • Each pellet boiler installation is custom designed for the unique conditions in your home. Our NYSERDA-certified wood pellet experts know exactly how to choose and install your pellet heating equipment to get the most heating bang for your buck, while creating the least wear and tear on your wood pellet equipment.
  • As a fuel source, wood pellets offer proven performance in a locally sourced, clean-burning, stably priced package. Switch to a wood pellet boiler and you could save 30 to 40 percent or more on your heating bill – especially compared to electric heating options.
